Snowshoeing, Snow Pits, Snowmen, and Science

Wednesday was a fantastic day(:  We started out with some great snowshoeing and track finding.  Within 5 minutes, we found elk tracks, squirrel tracks, bird tracks, and coyote tracks...

It may have been a bit longer than 5 minutes because we had to identify the tracks, but it was still a lot of fun!

We then continued snowshoeing until we arrived at a large riparian area (wetland area), where we began to dig our snow pits.  My sub-group's was about 6 feet long and 95 centimeters deep.  Although I did pitch in, Joe definitely won the contest for the most shoveling... He's just good at lifting 40 pound bricks of snow, and it seems that I don't have that particular talent.

After lunch, we decided to build a snowman.  Each bison added one piece of clothing or equipment (including hats, a teddy bear, a shovel, jolly ranchers, and a book).  In the end, we had an eclectic mix of items on the snow man, which was perfect since we are an eclectic group of people.

To finish the field day, we snowshoed up to an aspen grove.  Between estimating ages and observing trees, I also learned that you can use the powder on the bark as sunscreen, which is very helpful for people with very fair skin like me (:
